Terms of Use

SERIOUS
FIRST SEEN 2026-08-11 · VERSION 20260811_rev01 · FIRST CAPTURED VERSION

What changed, in plain language

How reviews are made

This is the first version of HT Digital Streams' Terms of Use we have on record, so everything in it is new to our tracking (there is no earlier version to compare against). The terms cover Hindustan Times, LiveMint and Live Hindustan. The most important points for readers: you give HT a permanent, worldwide, sub-licensable licence over anything you post; paid plans and free trials auto-renew and fees are generally nonrefundable; HT can change the terms at any time and your continued use counts as agreement; and if you use their money-related features (loans, credit cards, insurance, credit score), you must settle disputes through arbitration in New Delhi before an arbitrator that HT itself picks, and you authorise HT to share your personal information with lenders and credit bureaus.

Changes that may affect you

HT keeps a forever licence over what you postSERIOUS
CONTENT LICENSE

Comments, photos and other things you submit can be used by HT for good, anywhere in the world, without paying you. It can edit them, translate them, make new works from them, and pass those rights on to other companies. There is no stated way to take the licence back if you delete your post or your account.

“You grant us a worldwide, perpetual, nonexclusive, royalty free licence (with the right to sub licence) to host, store, use, reproduce, adapt, publish, translate, distribute, display, and create derivative works in any media (print or electronic).”

What you can do — Do not post photos or writing you may want to control or sell later; assume anything you submit can be reused by HT permanently.

Money-related disputes go to an arbitrator HT choosesSERIOUS
FORCED ARBITRATION

If you use HT's loan, credit card, insurance, investment or credit score features and something goes wrong, you cannot take HT to a normal court. The case goes to private arbitration in New Delhi, and HT alone picks the single arbitrator deciding it. The decision is final and confidential.

“by a sole arbitrator appointed by HTDSL”

What you can do — If you may need real legal recourse over a loan or insurance product, apply directly with the lender or insurer rather than through HT's site.

Your details can be sent to lenders and credit bureausSERIOUS
DATA SHARING

Using the financial features means agreeing that HT can pass your personal information to lending partners, insurers, credit bureaus and transaction platforms so they can run credit and eligibility checks and pitch credit products to you. HT is also paid commissions by those partners, so it has a financial reason to share.

“You authorize HTDSL to share your information with relevant partners/RTAs/ credit bureaus/ institutions/ transaction platforms to run eligibility/credit checks, and customise solutions including credit offerings.”

What you can do — Skip the loan, credit card and insurance sections of the site if you do not want your data circulated to lenders and bureaus.

Credit score sign-up means monthly bureau pulls for up to 6 monthsMATERIAL
DATA COLLECTION

Turning on the credit score feature appoints HT as your agent to fetch your credit report, and your personal details are sent to the bureau every month. The consent lasts up to 6 months unless you cancel it. HT can also store, analyse and use your credit data to recommend products to you.

“This consent shall be valid for a maximum period of 6 months or till such time the credit information is required to be retained to satisfy the purpose for which it was intended”

What you can do — To stop the monthly pulls, write to the Grievance Officer at HT Digital Streams Limited, 5th Floor, Lotus Tower, A Block, Community Centre, New Friends Colony, New Delhi-110025 and withdraw your consent.

Ad and analytics trackers labelled "essential" so you cannot turn them offMATERIAL
DATA COLLECTION

The cookie policy puts Google Analytics, Comscore and Google's ad server in the "essential" bucket, and says essential cookies cannot be switched off. Advertising trackers from Taboola, Pubmatic, RubiCon, Index Exchange and Facebook also build a profile of your interests to target you on other websites.

“These cookies are necessary for the website to function and cannot be switched off in our systems.”

What you can do — Block third-party cookies in your browser settings or use private browsing, since the site's own controls will not turn these off.

Auto-renewal, trials that turn into paid plans, and no refundsSERIOUS
BILLING & RENEWAL

Subscriptions keep charging you until you cancel, and a free trial becomes a paid plan if you do not cancel in time. Once charged, you generally cannot get your money back, even if you did not realise the renewal was coming.

“Fees are nonrefundable except where required by law or as stated in a specific offer.”

What you can do — Set a calendar reminder a few days before any trial or renewal date and cancel in your account settings (or in the app store, if you subscribed there).

Terms can change at any time with no real noticeSERIOUS
UNILATERAL CHANGES

HT can rewrite the rules whenever it likes just by posting a new version. You are treated as agreeing simply by continuing to use the site. Extra notice is only promised where a law forces it.

“We may update these Terms or the Services at any time by posting the updated Terms and, where required by law, providing additional notice.”
Broad disclaimers plus your promise to pay HT's legal billsSERIOUS
LIABILITY LIMITS

HT says the service is provided "as is", does not promise it will be accurate, secure or available, and rules out responsibility for most types of loss including lost data and lost money. On top of that, you must cover HT's costs and legal fees if your use of the site or something you post leads to a claim against it.

“To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages”
You permanently give up claims against the credit bureauSERIOUS
LIABILITY LIMITS

To use the credit score feature you must sign away, forever and unconditionally, any claim against CRIF High Mark - including claims about a privacy or confidentiality breach when your credit data is handed to HT. You also agree to defend and pay for the bureau if a third party sues it over your data.

“I shall not hold CIC responsible or liable for any loss, claim, liability, or damage of any kind resulting from, arising out of, or in any way related to: (a) delivery of my Consumer Credit Information to the Company;”

What you can do — Get your free credit report directly from the bureau's own website instead, so you are not asked to waive these rights.

Access can be cut off without warning and without a refundMATERIAL
TERMINATION

HT can suspend or close your account with no notice if it believes you broke the rules or to protect the service, and your access stops immediately. Nothing in the terms promises a refund for the unused part of a paid subscription. Inactive free accounts can also be deactivated.

“We may suspend or terminate access (with or without notice) if we believe you've breached these Terms or law, or to protect the Services or users.”
Your data can be kept after your account endsMATERIAL
DATA RETENTION

Closing your account does not mean your information is deleted. HT can hold on to it for as long as the law and its privacy policy permit, and no specific time limit is given.

“We may retain data post-termination as permitted by law and our Privacy Policy.”
You can only sue in New Delhi - or Mumbai under the credit annexureMATERIAL
JURISDICTION

Any court case must be brought in New Delhi, which is expensive and impractical if you live elsewhere in India. Confusingly, the credit bureau consent in Annexure A instead names Mumbai courts, so the two parts of the same document point to different cities.

“shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in Mumbai in regard to any dispute arising hereof”
Rules on sharing, scraping and AI use of the contentMINOR
USER OBLIGATIONS

You cannot share your login, get around the paywall, or let colleagues use a personal subscription at work. You also cannot copy content in bulk or use it to train AI systems. Breaking these rules can cost you your account.

“Credentials are individual and nontransferable. Do not share logins, bypass paywalls/meters, or attempt to defeat access controls.”
Free credit score feature may start chargingMINOR
BILLING & RENEWAL

The credit information service is free today, but HT reserves the right to begin charging for it later. No notice period or price is stated.

“The service is currently free; HTDSL may charge later.”

Changelog

  1. + ADDEDFirst recorded version of the Terms of Use

This is our first capture of this document, so the whole text is listed as new. Nothing below is necessarily a recent change by the company - it is a baseline of what the terms say today.

These Terms of Use (the "Terms") are a legally binding contract between HT Digital Streams Limited ("HTDSL") and you ("User," "you," "your").

  2. + ADDEDHT can change the terms whenever it wants

HT can update the terms or the service at any time just by posting the new version. If you keep using the site, you are treated as having agreed. Extra notice is only given when a law requires it.

We may update these Terms or the Services at any time by posting the updated Terms and, where required by law, providing additional notice. Your continued use after updates means you accept the changes.

  3. + ADDEDPermanent licence over anything you post

Anything you post - comments, photos, other submissions - can be used by HT forever, anywhere in the world, for free, including editing it, translating it, making new works from it, and handing those rights to other companies.

You grant us a worldwide, perpetual, nonexclusive, royalty free licence (with the right to sub licence) to host, store, use, reproduce, adapt, publish, translate, distribute, display, and create derivative works in any media (print or electronic).

  4. + ADDEDAuto-renewing subscriptions, converting free trials, and no refunds

Paid plans renew by themselves unless you cancel first in account settings, free trials turn into paid plans unless you cancel, and money already paid is generally not refunded.

Paid plans renew automatically unless you cancel in your account settings before renewal.

  5. + ADDEDArbitration for money-related services instead of court

Disputes about loans, credit cards, insurance and other partner services must go to private arbitration in New Delhi, and HT alone picks the single arbitrator. The result is final and kept confidential.

disputes between you and HTDSL relating to partner/regulated journeys shall be finally settled by arbitration in New Delhi, India, under the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996, by a sole arbitrator appointed by HTDSL

  6. + ADDEDYour information can go to lenders, credit bureaus and other partners

If you use the financial features, you authorise HT to pass your information to lending partners, credit bureaus and transaction platforms for credit and eligibility checks and for marketing credit offers to you.

You authorize HTDSL to share your information with relevant partners/RTAs/ credit bureaus/ institutions/ transaction platforms to run eligibility/credit checks, and customise solutions including credit offerings.

  7. + ADDEDCredit score service: monthly data pulls and a 6-month consent

Signing up for the credit score feature makes HT your agent to pull your credit report. Your details go to the credit bureau every month, and the consent lasts up to 6 months unless you withdraw it. HT can also store and analyse your credit data to recommend products to you.

I further authorize the Company to share with CICs my personal information/details to procure my credit information on a monthly frequency and use the same to provide me with the said service.

  8. + ADDEDGiving up the right to sue the credit bureau

For the credit score feature, you permanently give up any claim against the credit bureau CRIF High Mark - including for privacy or confidentiality problems when your data is handed over - and you promise to cover its legal costs if someone sues it because of you.

I irrevocably, unconditionally and entirely release, waive and forever discharge CIC, its officers, directors, employees, agents, licensees, affiliates, successors and assigns

  9. + ADDEDService is "as is", with broad liability limits and your promise to cover HT's costs

HT does not promise the service works, is accurate, or is secure, refuses responsibility for most kinds of loss, and requires you to pay its legal costs if your use of the site or your posts cause a claim.

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless HTDSL and its affiliates, officers, directors, employees, and agents from claims, losses, and costs (including reasonable legal fees)

  10. + ADDEDAccounts can be cut off without notice

HT can suspend or close your access with no warning if it believes you broke the rules or to protect the service. Inactive free accounts can also be deactivated. Nothing is said about refunds if a paid account is closed.

We may suspend or terminate access (with or without notice) if we believe you've breached these Terms or law, or to protect the Services or users.

  11. + ADDEDData can be kept after you leave

After your access ends, HT can hold on to your data for as long as the law and its privacy policy allow.

We may retain data post-termination as permitted by law and our Privacy Policy.

  12. + ADDEDCourt cases only in New Delhi - or Mumbai for the credit bureau annexure

Indian law applies and only New Delhi courts can hear disputes. The credit bureau consent in Annexure A instead points to Mumbai courts, which is inconsistent with the main terms.

the courts at New Delhi shall have exclusive jurisdiction

  13. + ADDEDAd and analytics cookies listed as "essential" and always on

The cookie policy puts Google Analytics, Comscore and the Google ad server GAM in the "essential" group, which the policy says cannot be switched off. Separate advertising cookies from Taboola, Pubmatic, RubiCon and others build a profile of your interests across other websites.

These cookies are necessary for the website to function and cannot be switched off in our systems.

  14. + ADDEDNew rules on how you may use the site

You must be 18 or older, you cannot share your login or get around the paywall, personal subscriptions cannot be shared at work, and you cannot scrape the site or use its content to train AI systems without written permission.

You must not use our content or metadata to train, fine-tune, evaluate, benchmark, or improve AI/ML systems without a written license.

  15. + ADDEDCredit score feature is free for now, but may cost later

HT says the credit information service is currently free and reserves the right to start charging for it.

The service is currently free; HTDSL may charge later.

  16. + ADDEDYou can withdraw your credit-data consent

A helpful point: you can pull back your consent for the credit information service at any time by writing to the Grievance Officer.

You may withdraw consent at any time via communication to the Grievance Officer (Clause 24).
