Viber Privacy Policy

SERIOUS
FIRST SEEN 2026-09-24 · VERSION 20260924_rev01 · FIRST CAPTURED VERSION

What changed, in plain language

How reviews are made

This update mostly cleans up typos and formatting, but it also adds three changes worth knowing about: Viber will now keep your Dating chat messages on its servers for up to 3 months (previously all messages were deleted almost immediately after delivery), Viber Plus subscribers may have their name, photo, and subscription status shown to their own contacts as a promotion, and the marketing/advertising vendors Viber uses now have a much broader mandate covering sales, user acquisition, and engagement campaigns, not just ad measurement.

Changes that may affect you

Marketing vendors' role expanded well beyond ad measurementSERIOUS
DATA SHARING

Companies Viber shares your data with for marketing purposes can now use it for a much wider set of activities, sales, promotions, getting new users, and keeping you engaged, not just measuring ads and app installs. This means your data can flow to these outside companies for more purposes than before.

“**Advertising, sales and marketing service providers,** who help us conduct, manage, measure and support our advertising, promotional, sales, marketing, user acquisition and user engagement activities and campaigns;”

What you can do — Check Viber's Ads, Cookies & Tracking Technologies Policy for opt-out options if you want to limit this kind of data sharing.

Dating chat messages now stored for up to 3 monthsMATERIAL
DATA RETENTION

Previously, Viber said it doesn't store your messages once delivered. Now, if you use Viber Dating, your chats there are kept on Viber's servers for up to 3 months (and possibly longer during investigations or legal holds), which is new exposure for potentially sensitive conversations.

“Viber Dating chats are retained on our servers for up to 3 months from the date they are sent.”

What you can do — If you use Viber Dating and want to limit retained chat history, avoid sharing sensitive details in those chats and delete your dating profile or conversations when you no longer need them.

Viber Plus subscription status may be shown to your contactsMATERIAL
DATA SHARING

If you enable the Viber Plus badge, Viber may reveal to your contacts that you're a paying subscriber, along with your name and photo, as part of promoting Viber Plus. This shares your subscription status with people in your address book without a described opt-out beyond disabling the badge.

“we may show to your contacts that you are a Viber Plus subscriber (including your name and profile photo) when we promote Viber Plus in the App”

What you can do — Turn off the Viber Plus badge in your settings if you don't want your subscriber status shared with your contacts.

Broader third-party data allowed for fraud checksMINOR
DATA COLLECTION

Viber removed the limit that said fraud-related data from trusted third parties had to relate specifically to your IP address, meaning it can now draw on a wider range of third-party data about you for fraud detection.

“We may use data from trusted third parties to enhance the precision in detecting fraudulent activity;”
ID documents may now be requested for verificationMINOR
DATA COLLECTION

Viber can now ask you to submit ID documents or other proof of identity when you request your data rights or need account verification. This is a new category of sensitive data collection, though Viber states it's used only for verification and kept only as long as needed.

“we may ask you to provide identification documents or other proof of identity, which will be used solely for verification purposes and retained only as long as necessary to complete the verification”

  2. ± CHANGEDMinor wording and typo fixes

    Your account login details, such as your username and any password or security pin-code

  3. + ADDEDNew ID verification step for rights requests and account checks

    If you ask Viber to exercise your data protection rights or Viber needs to confirm you own an account, they may now ask you for an ID document or other proof of identity. They say it will only be used to verify you and kept only as long as needed for that.

    In certain cases, such as when you request to exercise your data protection rights or when we need to verify account ownership, we may ask you to provide identification documents or other proof of identity, which will be used solely for verification purposes and retained only as long as necessary to complete the verification.

  4. + ADDEDDating chats are now kept on Viber's servers for up to 3 months

    Viber previously said it does not store your messages once delivered. Now there's a carve-out: messages sent through Viber Dating are kept on Viber's servers for up to 3 months, and possibly longer if there's a legal hold or investigation.

    As stated above, your messages will not be stored by us once they have been delivered.

    Viber Dating chats are retained on our servers for up to 3 months from the date they are sent. This retention period supports safety, security, moderation, and enforcement of our policies. Retention may be extended where required by applicable law, a pending legal hold, or an ongoing investigation.

  5. ± CHANGEDMarketing/advertising vendors now cover a much wider range of activities

    The category of outside companies Viber shares data with for advertising was renamed and expanded. It used to be limited to helping with 'advertising measurements and app installations.' Now it covers running and supporting advertising, promotions, sales, marketing, getting new users, and keeping existing users engaged.

    **Advertising and marketing service providers,** who help us with advertising measurements and app installations;

    **Advertising, sales and marketing service providers,** who help us conduct, manage, measure and support our advertising, promotional, sales, marketing, user acquisition and user engagement activities and campaigns;

  6. + ADDEDViber Plus badge may be shown to your contacts

    If you're a Viber Plus subscriber with the badge turned on, Viber may show your contacts that you subscribe to Viber Plus, including your name and profile photo, as part of promoting Viber Plus in the app.

    If you are a Viber Plus subscriber and have your Viber Plus badge enabled, we may show to your contacts that you are a Viber Plus subscriber (including your name and profile photo) when we promote Viber Plus in the App.

  7. ± CHANGEDFraud-detection data from third parties no longer limited to IP addresses

    Viber's fraud-prevention section used to say it may use data from trusted third parties specifically 'related to your IP addresses.' That limit has been removed, so Viber can now use a broader range of third-party data for fraud detection.

    We may use data from trusted third parties related to your IP addresses to enhance the precision in detecting fraudulent activity;
