About Your Subscription
This is the first captured version of USA TODAY's subscription terms, so everything in it reads as new. The terms lock in auto-renewing billing through EZ Pay, say payments are non-refundable with no credit for the unused part of a period, cap what you can ever recover from USA TODAY at about one month's subscription fee, give you only one year to bring any claim, and bar you from joining class actions. Print subscribers are still charged full rate for months with non-print days and pay a $5 fee for a paper invoice.
You give up the right to join class actions
If USA TODAY overcharges or shortchanges many subscribers at once, you cannot band together in a group lawsuit. You would have to sue alone, which is rarely worth it for a small subscription amount. This also reaches back to claims from before these terms took effect.
“You and the USA TODAY agree that each party may bring disputes against the other party only in an individual capacity, and not as a plaintiff or class member in any purported class or representative proceeding, including, without limitation, a federal or state class action lawsuit.”
What you can do — Nothing in these terms describes an opt-out, so if this matters to you, weigh it before subscribing or renewing. Note you can still sue individually or in small claims court.
Damages capped at about one month's subscription fee
Even if a serious problem costs you real money, the most you can get back is roughly one month of what you pay. Everything else, like lost profits or knock-on losses, is off the table. The cap applies even if that leaves you undercompensated and even if USA TODAY knew the harm could happen.
“You can recover from USA TODAY and its affiliates, resellers, distributors, and vendors only direct damages up to an amount equal to the amount you pay for your subscription for one month.”
Auto-renewal with no refunds for unused time
Your card is charged automatically before each term ends, and once charged you do not get that money back if you cancel partway through. Refunds are entirely up to USA TODAY, and giving one to someone does not mean you will get one.
“Gannett does not provide credits, refunds, or prorated billing for any subscription cancelled mid-period.”
What you can do — Set a calendar reminder a few days before your renewal date and cancel by calling 1-800-872-0001 (Mon-Fri, 8:00am-7:00pm) or via help.usatoday.com before the charge posts.
Only one year to bring a claim
Many states normally give you several years to sue over a billing or contract problem. These terms cut that to one year from the moment the problem first arises, after which your claim is dead for good.
“All claims must be filed within one year.”
What you can do — If you think you were wrongly charged, raise it in writing quickly rather than letting it sit.
No self-service cancellation path described
To cancel you have to go through customer service, and the phone line is closed on weekends. There is no described one-click online cancellation, which makes stopping charges harder than starting them.
“If at any time you decide to cancel your subscription, which you can do at any time, you may contact customer service.”
What you can do — Cancel on a weekday during business hours and keep a written record (confirmation number, email, or chat transcript) of the cancellation.
Full price charged on days with no printed paper and during vacation stops
Months that include non-print days cost the same as any other month, and pausing delivery for a trip does not pause your bill. You only get credit for the delivery part, and the only way to stop charges is to cancel outright.
“in the event we do not deliver a print edition to you for any reason (whether by your request or otherwise), your subscription will be credited for the delivery portion of your print delivery”
What you can do — Check the listed non-print dates for 2026 (1/1, 5/25, 7/4, 9/7, 11/26, 12/25) so you know what you are paying for.
$5 fee for receiving a paper bill
Getting a printed invoice costs an extra $5.00 each time. The only way around it is to hand over your card for automatic monthly charges.
“A printed subscription invoice includes a $5.00 paper statement fee.”
What you can do — Switch to EZ Pay to avoid the $5 fee, but be aware that it enables automatic renewal charges.
