Privacy Statement
This update mainly adds data flows and disclosures tied to a new 'PayPal World' cross-border payment feature and newly-covered cryptocurrency services, and adds a line admitting PayPal may sometimes be legally barred from telling you when it discloses your data to authorities. On the positive side, PayPal now says it will stop sharing your creditworthiness data with its corporate affiliates and stop letting those affiliates market to you.
Cryptocurrency activity now falls under this privacy policy
PayPal added its cryptocurrency services (run by affiliate PayPal Digital Inc.) to the list of 'Services' this policy covers, meaning data from your crypto activity can now be collected, used, and shared under these same broad terms.
“cryptocurrency services offered by PayPal Digital Inc. (a PayPal affiliate company)”
You may not always be told when your data is shared with authorities
PayPal added a line saying that in some cases it isn't legally allowed to tell you when it discloses your information to courts, law enforcement, or other authorities. This means there are situations where your data can be handed over without your knowledge.
“In some cases, PayPal may not be permitted to provide you with information about such disclosures.”
New data sharing with outside wallets and processors for PayPal World
To support a new cross-border payment feature called PayPal World, PayPal will now receive and use your information from other companies' wallets, payment networks, and processors.
“We will use information from third parties, including third-party wallets, payment networks, and processors, to process PayPal World transactions.”
Broader data collection from non-account holders receiving payments
PayPal previously said it collects data from non-account holders paid via Visa+; now it also collects data when they're paid through unnamed 'other third party wallets, payment networks, and processors,' widening the situations where your data is gathered even without a PayPal account.
“or a payment from a payor using the Hyperwallet services”
