Opera Privacy Statement
This update makes three narrow changes, all tied to legal/administrative wording rather than new data practices. First, Opera removed 'legitimate interest' as a stated legal basis for processing your Opera account data in AI Chat, leaving only consent and contract as the listed bases. Second and third, in both the Cashback and GameMaker sections, Opera added more detail about why payment data can be kept for up to five years — now explicitly citing evidence-keeping, tax rules, and potential lawsuits, in addition to 'regulatory requirements.' The five-year retention period itself, and what data is collected or shared, did not change.
Weaker legal basis for your Opera account data in AI Chat
Previously, Opera said it relied partly on 'legitimate interest' to use your Opera account data in AI Chat — a legal basis under which you typically have a right to object. That basis has been dropped from the list, with only consent and contract remaining. In practice, Opera still says it doesn't share this account data with anyone, so the real-world handling of your data hasn't changed, but you may have fewer grounds to formally object to this specific use going forward.
“Legal basis: Consent (for any data you input to AI Chat, and shopping suggestions, and connection of third party AI tools), Contractual grounds (other data).”
Broader stated reasons for keeping payment data up to 5 years
Opera already kept Cashback and GameMaker payment data for up to five years. The update now explicitly says this can include keeping records for potential lawsuits, not just general regulatory compliance. This doesn't extend the five-year limit, but it does make clear that litigation is one of the reasons your payment history could be kept that long.
“Your payment data may be stored for up to five years due to regulatory requirements, like evidence purposes, tax requirements and potential litigation during a statute of limitations.”

| 69 | Cashback is an incentive program where you can earn rewards when purchasing goods or services from participating online merchants. If you choose to use the Cashback program and visit supported websites, we will collect merchant URLs, a list of your purchased items, transaction amounts, and IP address. To enable payouts, your [Opera account](https://auth.opera.com/) will be linked with a payment service provider, which will receive your customer ID, and relevant payment related data with Opera. Your payment data may be stored for up to five years due to regulatory requirements. You can modify your Opera account, delete it, or request a copy of your data using your [profile page](https://auth.opera.com/account/edit-profile). Your Cashback data will be automatically deleted after two years of inactivity. You may choose to delete your Cashback account, which will erase your personal data from the system, through the Account Setting menus in Cashback account. | |

- − REMOVEDAI Chat: 'legitimate interest' dropped as a legal basis for Opera account data
The AI Chat section used to list three legal bases for handling your data, including 'legitimate interest' specifically for your Opera account data. That basis has been removed, so your Opera account data processed in connection with AI Chat now appears to fall only under the general 'contractual grounds' basis instead.
Legal basis: Legitimate interest (for Opera account data), Consent (for any data you input to AI Chat, and shopping suggestions, and connection of third party AI tools), Contractual grounds (other data).
