Linode Cookie Policy

This is the first captured version of Linode's cookie policy, so the diff shows the whole document as new rather than a real change to existing terms. The policy explains that Linode.com uses cookies and similar tracking tools, lists every cookie by category (strictly necessary, performance, functional, targeting, social media), and points to a "Manage Preferences" link for opting out of the optional ones. Nothing here can be shown to be a loss of rights compared with an earlier version, because there is no earlier version on record. Worth knowing: the targeting and social media categories include trackers from advertising and data companies such as DoubleClick, Adobe's demdex, LinkedIn, Baidu, and Twitter, which can build a profile of your interests across other websites.

Linode's site loads cookies from advertising and social media firms — DoubleClick, Adobe's demdex, LinkedIn, Baidu, Twitter, Lytics, everesttech, and 6sense among them. Those companies can recognize your browser on other websites and build a picture of what you're interested in. This is not a new practice being introduced: it is simply the first time this policy has been recorded, so there is no earlier version showing it was any different.

“These cookies are capable of tracking your browser across other sites and building up a profile of your interests.”

What you can do — Click the "Manage Preferences" link at the bottom of the Linode cookie policy page and switch off Targeting and Social Media cookies. Repeat this in every browser you use, since the setting does not carry over.

Besides normal cookies, the site uses web beacons, pixel tags, and browser storage. These do similar jobs to cookies but some are not removed when you clear your cookies. This is disclosed openly and is standard for large websites.

1Linode.com uses cookies and similar technologies such as web beacons, pixel tags, local storage, session storage or scripts (collectively "cookies") to ensure the fast, reliable, and secure operation of the website, to improve your website experience, to provide you with enhanced functionality, to enable certain social media interactions, and to manage your cookie choices. To learn more about our use of these technologies, please see the [Tracking Technologies](https://www.akamai.com/legal/privacy-statement) section in our [Privacy Statement](https://www.akamai.com/legal/privacy-statement).
+ ADDEDFirst recorded version of the cookie policy

There is no previous text to compare against — this entire cookie policy was captured for the first time. Everything below describes what the policy says now, not something Linode newly took away.

+ ADDEDExplains what tracking tools are used and why

Linode says it uses cookies, web beacons, pixel tags, and local/session storage to keep the site running, improve your experience, enable social media features, and remember your cookie choices. More detail lives in Akamai's Privacy Statement.

3Certain cookies can be set by us (first-party cookies) or by another company (third-party cookies).
4
5You can manage your preferences for storing cookies on your device from Linode.com to remember registration details, collect statistics to enhance the usability, analyze site usage, customize content delivered to you and assist in our marketing efforts by clicking on "Manage Preferences" link below.
6
7You can set your browser to block all cookies or alert you in case cookies are placed. Please note that Linode.com uses client-side cookies to record your preference. In case you clear your browser cookies or switch browsers, your cookie preference will not persist. Hence, we recommend to visit Linode.com in all the browsers that you use, in order to have your cookie choices being reflected across all browsers.
+ ADDEDYou can change your cookie settings, but choices don't follow you between browsers

There is a "Manage Preferences" link for controlling optional cookies. Your choice is stored in the browser itself, so clearing cookies or using a different browser wipes it out — you have to set it again in each browser you use.

9### Cookie List
10
11Cookies are categorized into different types. Read on for details about each of these categories and cookies being set under each category.
+ ADDEDFull list of cookies, sorted into five categories

The policy lists cookies by group: strictly necessary (can't be turned off), performance (site analytics), functional (personalization), targeting (advertising), and social media. Each row names the website that sets the cookie and whether it belongs to Linode or an outside company.

12
13#### Strictly Necessary Cookies
14
15These cookies are necessary for the website to function and cannot be switched off in our systems. They are usually only set in response to actions made by you which amount to a request for services, such as setting your privacy preferences, logging in or filling in forms.

58#### Targeting Cookies
59
60These cookies are set through our site by our advertising partners. They may be used by those companies to build a profile of your interests and show you relevant adverts on other sites. They are based on uniquely identifying your browser and internet device. If you do not allow these cookies, you will experience less targeted advertising, adverts will be shown to you, nevertheless.
+ ADDEDAdvertising cookies from many outside companies

The targeting section names third-party trackers including DoubleClick (Google ads), demdex and dpm.demdex.net (Adobe), LinkedIn, Baidu, Twitter/t.co, everesttech.net, lytics.io, and 6sc.co. These can recognize your browser and device across other websites.

+ ADDEDTurning off ad cookies does not remove ads

The policy is upfront that blocking targeting cookies makes ads less personalized but does not stop you from seeing ads.
