Cricinfo Privacy Notice
This is the first version of Cricinfo's privacy notice we've captured, so everything in it is new to us — there's no earlier version to compare against. The notice, run by Jiostar India (formerly Star India), allows broad collection of personal data (including audio and video recordings, payment and bank details, and data bought or received from ad networks and other outside sources), sharing of advertising identifiers with ad exchanges and of your data with group companies for joint marketing, storage for a minimum of one year, transfers of your data anywhere in the world, and changes to the notice that take effect immediately with notice only when the law requires it.
Ad IDs shared with ad exchanges to track you across other sites
Your advertising identifiers can be handed to ad exchanges and marketing analytics companies, which use them to choose ads for you on Cricinfo and on unrelated websites and apps. That means your cricket browsing can shape ads you see elsewhere.
“We or our service providers may also share your advertisement identifiers with advertising exchanges, and marketing analytics and other digital advertising and marketing service providers. The advertisement identifiers are used by these exchanges and service providers to decide which advertisement you see both on our Platform and on third-party sites and applications.”
What you can do — Review and reject non-essential cookies via the site's Cookie Policy settings, and reset or limit your device's advertising ID in your phone's privacy settings.
Your data can go to group companies and other third parties for joint marketing
Jiostar can pass your information to other companies in its group and to outside partners so they can market to you or offer you similar services. That widens who holds your data well beyond Cricinfo.
“to share your information with our group companies and other third parties in so far as required for joint marketing purposes, or to offer similar services, or to provide you with various value-added services;”
What you can do — Email hello@cricinfo.com to withdraw consent for marketing use of your data, and turn off marketing preferences in your account.
Very broad collection, including recordings, bank details, and data bought from others
The list of data collected covers audio and video recordings, exact location and pincode, your social media profile, your searches and gameplay, your device and IP address, and bank account details and statements. They can also build on this with information received from ad networks, analytics firms and public sources — data you never gave them directly.
“Information we receive from other sources including third parties and publicly available sources: We may receive Personal Information about you from various third parties such as analytics providers, advertising networks and platforms, sports authorities and associations, search information providers, and other publicly available sources.”
What you can do — Share only the minimum when registering, deny microphone, camera and location permissions unless a feature needs them, and avoid saving payment details you don't use.
Profile-based targeted advertising and AI-powered features
They build a profile from your interests and use of the site to serve targeted ads, and they feed data into features powered by artificial intelligence. Your activity is used to decide what ads and content you get.
“to serve targeted advertisements to you based on your profile, interests, and usage of the Platform using our ad serving platforms and tools;”
What you can do — Opt out of personalised advertising in the Cookie Policy consent settings and in your device ad settings.
Minimum one-year retention, and anonymised data kept forever
Even if you want your data gone, they say it stays for at least a year from collection, and possibly longer if they claim a purpose. After that, instead of deleting it they may strip your name from it and then keep and use it indefinitely with no further notice.
“Upon completion of the retention period for each category of Personal Information as described above, we shall delete or destroy, to the extent technically possible, Personal Information in our possession or control, or render the Personal Information into anonymised form, so that it no longer constitutes Personal Information, in which case we may use this information indefinitely without further notice to you.”
What you can do — Send an erasure request to hello@cricinfo.com, but expect some data to be held for at least a year.
Notice can change at any time, effective immediately, often without telling you
Jiostar can rewrite this privacy notice on its own whenever it wants. The new version applies right away, and they only promise to tell you when the law forces them to. You could be under different privacy rules without ever hearing about it.
“We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to modify the terms of this Notice from time to time in order to ensure compliance with applicable laws or in response to changing regulatory or operational requirements. Any changes to this Notice shall be effective immediately (unless we state otherwise).”
What you can do — Check the "Last Updated" date at the top of the notice from time to time to see if it changed.
Your data travels with the company if it's sold
If Jiostar merges, is acquired, or reorganises, your personal information can be transferred to other business entities. The new owner may have different plans for your data.
“In the event Jiostar merges with or is acquired by another company or in cases of re-organisation or re-structuring of the business, we and our affiliates and group companies may share your Personal Information, wholly or in part, with other business entities.”
Data can be stored or processed in any country
Your information may be sent to affiliates, group companies, or service providers anywhere in the world. Some of those countries may have weaker privacy protections, and they only promise "reasonable steps" to keep it safe.
“We operate globally and may transfer your Personal Information to Jiostar affiliated companies or group companies or service providers or third-party recipients, in locations around the world for the purposes described in this Notice.”
No responsibility for third-party services or for data in transit
Cricinfo takes no responsibility for how embedded or linked third-party services handle your data, and says that sending your information over the internet is at your own risk. If something goes wrong in those situations, they say it isn't on them.
“Any transmission is at your own risk.”
Refusing consent can lock you out of the site
They treat some data as essential. If you withdraw consent for it, they may stop giving you access to the platform or turn off features. In practice, your right to say no comes with the cost of losing the service.
“In such cases, if you withdraw your consent, we may be unable to provide you with access to the Platform or certain features of the Platform may not perform as expected.”
Complaints can take up to 90 days, and the contact section reference is broken
They give themselves up to 90 days to respond to a privacy complaint, which is a long wait. The notice also tells you to use "Section 12" for contact details, but the sections aren't numbered — the email address is actually hello@cricinfo.com, listed in the children's privacy part.
“If you wish to exercise any of the rights set out above, please write an email to us in the manner specified in Section 12 of this Notice.”
What you can do — Send privacy requests and complaints to hello@cricinfo.com; if you get no satisfactory answer, you can escalate to the Data Protection Board of India.
