What changed, in plain language

How reviews are made

This update adds a full California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) notice to Britannica's privacy policy. Note: the earlier snapshot of this page had no text, so this may be a section that was always there but wasn't captured before — either way, here is what it says. The big items: Britannica says it has sold California residents' identifiers, browsing activity, location data, and profile 'inferences' to advertising partners in the last 12 months, and shares data with subsidiaries, contractors, data aggregators, and marketing partners. You can opt out of sales with a 'Do Not Sell My Info' link, but the opt-out has real limits: it must be repeated on every device and browser, it does not undo sales made more than 90 days ago, and Britannica will keep sharing some data with partners for ad measurement. The notice also says Britannica can change the policy at any time and that continuing to use the site means you accept the changes.

Changes that may affect you

Britannica sells your identifiers, browsing activity, and location to advertisersCRITICAL
DATA SHARING

The notice says that in the past year the company sold categories of personal data — things like your device and cookie IDs, what you browse, where you are, and profiles built about you — to advertising partners. This is an actual sale of personal data, not just sharing with a vendor. It applies to the free, ad-supported parts of the service; school and library (Institutional) services are excluded.

“Except with respect to our Institutional Services, in the preceding twelve (12) months, the Company has sold the following categories of personal information collected through our ad-supported Services:”

What you can do — Click the "Do Not Sell My Info" link on britannica.com — and repeat it in every browser and on every device you use, since the setting is stored per browser. You can also email the privacy address listed in the notice, or call (800) 323-1229.

Your data goes to data aggregators and marketing partnersSERIOUS
DATA SHARING

Besides Britannica's own companies and vendors, your information can go to 'data aggregators' — firms whose business is combining data about people from many sources — and to partners who market products to you. Once data reaches an aggregator, it is very hard to track where it ends up.

“- Subsidiaries and affiliates. - Contractors and service providers. - Data aggregators. - Third parties with whom we partner to offer products and services to you.”

What you can do — Use the "Do Not Sell My Info" link, and also opt out of interest-based ads industry-wide at optout.aboutads.info and optout.networkadvertising.org.

Opting out does not undo past sales or stop all sharingMATERIAL
DATA SHARING

After you opt out, Britannica still shares some of your data with the same partners, now labeled 'service providers,' for ad measurement and similar work. And anything sold more than 90 days before you opted out stays in the buyers' hands and can keep being used. Your opt-out looks forward, not backward.

“Note that although we will not sell your personal information after you click that button, we will continue to share some personal information with our partners (who will function as our service providers in such instance) to help us perform advertising-related functions”

What you can do — Opt out as early as possible, since only sales from the last 90 days can be pulled back.

Location data, browsing activity, and profiles about you are collectedMATERIAL
DATA COLLECTION

The notice confirms Britannica collects your location, what you do on its sites and apps, whether you open its emails, and 'inferences' — guesses about your interests and habits built from that activity. This is broader than what most people expect from an encyclopedia site.

“In particular, our websites, apps, emails, and other products, services and platforms may have collected the following categories of personal information from its consumers within the last twelve (12) months:”

What you can do — Turn off location permission for Britannica in your browser and phone settings, and reset or limit your device's advertising ID.

The policy can change at any time and silence counts as agreementSERIOUS
UNILATERAL CHANGES

Britannica can rewrite this privacy notice whenever it chooses, with no promise to email you or give advance warning. Just posting the new version is enough, and if you keep using the site you are treated as having accepted it — even if you never saw the change.

“**Your continued use of our websites, mobile applications, and other products, services and platforms** **following the posting of changes constitutes your acceptance of such changes**”

What you can do — Check the privacy notice's effective date every few months if you care about how your data is used.

Nine reasons the company can refuse to delete your dataMATERIAL
DATA RETENTION

You can ask Britannica to delete your information, but the notice lists nine exceptions that let it keep the data — including security, debugging, research, legal obligations, and broad catch-alls like 'internal uses that are reasonably aligned with consumer expectations.' These are allowed under California law, but the last two are wide enough to cover a lot.

“We may deny your deletion request if retaining the information is necessary for us or our service provider(s) to:”

What you can do — When you request deletion, ask in writing which specific exception applies to any data they keep.

Limits on how you exercise your rightsMINOR
OTHER

You can only ask for a copy of your data twice a year. If you want someone else to act for you, they must be registered with the California Secretary of State — an ordinary friend or family member cannot file on your behalf. Britannica may also charge a fee for requests it considers excessive or repetitive.

“You may only make a verifiable consumer request for access or data portability twice within a 12-month period.”
Your data can be handed over if the company is soldMINOR
DATA SHARING

If Britannica merges, restructures, is sold, or goes bankrupt, your personal information is treated as an asset that transfers with the business. The new owner's privacy practices could differ from Britannica's.

“in which personal information held by the Company about our Website users is among the assets transferred”

Changelog

  1. + ADDEDA California privacy notice was added

The policy now includes a section written specifically for California residents, explaining rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), what data is collected, and how to make requests.

This Privacy Notice for California Residents supplements the information contained elsewhere in this Privacy Notice and applies solely to all visitors, users, and others who reside in the State of California ("consumers" or "you").

  2. + ADDEDBritannica states it sells personal information to advertising partners

The company discloses that over the past year it sold categories including account/device identifiers, browsing and app activity, location data, and inferences about you, for ad-supported services. Institutional (school/library) services are excluded from this.

Except with respect to our Institutional Services, in the preceding twelve (12) months, the Company has sold the following categories of personal information collected through our ad-supported Services:

  3. + ADDEDList of who your data goes to

Data may be shared with company affiliates, contractors and service providers, data aggregators (companies that combine data from many sources), and partners who market products to you.

We may share your personal information with the following categories of third parties:

  4. + ADDEDWhat is collected: location, browsing activity, and inferences

The collection table confirms Britannica collects identifiers, customer records, purchase information, internet/network activity, geolocation, and inferences. It says it does not collect biometric data, sensory data, protected-class characteristics, employment info, or non-public education records.

Our websites, software applications (apps), emails (with your consent, where required by law), and other products, services and platforms collect information that identifies, relates to, describes, references, is capable of being associated with, or could reasonably be linked, directly or indirectly, with a particular consumer or device ("personal information").

  5. + ADDEDHow to opt out of data sales

You can click the 'Do Not Sell My Info' link on Britannica sites and apps, or email the privacy address. You must do this separately on every device and browser you use.

If you do not wish for us or our partners to sell your personal information to third parties for advertising purposes, click the **"Do Not Sell My Info"** link accessible from the pages of our websites, apps, and other products, services and platforms.

  6. + ADDEDLimits on what opting out actually stops

Even after you opt out, Britannica keeps sharing some data with partners for ad measurement and fraud prevention, and data sold more than 90 days before your opt-out can still be used by whoever bought it.

it will not opt you out of the use of previously collected and sold personal information (except for personal information sold within 90 days prior to your exercising your right to opt out) or all interest-based advertising

  7. + ADDEDRights to see, download, and delete your data

California residents can ask what data Britannica holds, get a copy, and request deletion. Requests go through a phone number or email, and Britannica aims to answer within 45 days. Access and copy requests are limited to twice per year, and nine exceptions let the company refuse deletion.

You have the right to request that the Company delete any of your personal information that we collected from you and retained, subject to certain exceptions.

  8. + ADDEDRules for minors

Britannica says it will not sell data of users it knows are under 16 without permission — from the teen for ages 13 to 15, or from a parent for under 13.

We do not sell the personal information of consumers we actually know are less than 16 years of age, unless we receive affirmative authorization (the "right to opt-in") from either the consumer who is between 13 and 16 years of age, or the parent or guardian of a consumer less than 13 years of age.

  9. + ADDEDNo penalty for using your privacy rights

The company promises not to deny service, charge more, or lower quality because you exercised a privacy right. It notes it currently offers no 'financial incentive' programs that trade discounts for data.

We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your CCPA rights.

  10. + ADDEDThe policy can change at any time, and using the site means you agree

Britannica can rewrite this notice whenever it wants. It will post the new version and update the date, but will not necessarily tell you directly; simply continuing to use the site counts as your acceptance.

The Company reserves the right to amend this privacy notice at our discretion and at any time.

  11. + ADDEDYour data can transfer in a sale of the company

If Britannica is sold, merged, restructured, or goes through bankruptcy, your personal information can be part of what is handed over to the new owner.

To evaluate or conduct a merger, divestiture, restructuring, reorganization, dissolution, or other sale or transfer of some or all of the Company's assets

  12. + ADDEDContact details for privacy questions

A phone number, email, and mailing address for the company's Data Protection Officer in Chicago are provided, along with a separate address for California 'Shine the Light' marketing-disclosure requests.

    Calling us at (800) 323-1229; Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (U.S. Central Time)

70
71**Your Rights and Choices**
72
73The CCPA provides consumers (California residents) with specific rights regarding their personal information. This section describes your CCPA rights and explains how to exercise those rights.
74
75**_Access to Specific Information and Data Portability Rights_**
76
77You have the right to request that the Company disclose certain information to you about our collection and use of your personal information over the past 12 months. Once we receive and confirm your verifiable consumer request, we will disclose to you:
78
79- The categories of personal information we collected about you.
80- The categories of sources for the personal information we collected about you.
81- Our business or commercial purpose for collecting or selling that personal information.
82- The categories of third parties with whom we share that personal information.
83- The specific pieces of personal information we collected about you (also called a data portability request).
84- If we disclosed your personal information for a business purpose, we will identify the personal information categories that each category of recipient obtained.
85
86**Deletion Request Rights**
87
88You have the right to request that the Company delete any of your personal information that we collected from you and retained, subject to certain exceptions. Once we receive and confirm your verifiable consumer request, we will delete (and direct our service providers to delete) your personal information from our records, unless an exception applies.
89
90We may deny your deletion request if retaining the information is necessary for us or our service provider(s) to:
91
921. Complete the transaction for which we collected the personal information, provide a good or service that you requested, take actions reasonably anticipated within the context of our ongoing business relationship with you, or otherwise perform our contract with you.
932. Detect security incidents, protect against malicious, deceptive, fraudulent, or illegal activity, or prosecute those responsible for such activities.
943. Debug products to identify and repair errors that impair existing intended functionality.
954. Exercise free speech, ensure the right of another consumer to exercise their free speech rights, or exercise another right provided for by law.
965. Comply with the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act (Cal. Penal Code § 1546 et. seq.).
976. Engage in public or peer-reviewed scientific, historical, or statistical research in the public interest that adheres to all other applicable ethics and privacy laws, when the information's deletion may likely render impossible or seriously impair the research's achievement, if you previously provided informed consent.
987. Enable solely internal uses that are reasonably aligned with consumer expectations based on your relationship with us.
998. Comply with a legal obligation.
1009. Make other internal and lawful uses of that information that are compatible with the context in which you provided it.
101
102**_Exercising Access, Data Portability, and Deletion Rights_**
103
104To exercise the access, data portability, and deletion rights described above, please submit a verifiable consumer request to us by either:
105
106- Calling us at (800) 323-1229; Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (U.S. Central Time)
107- Emailing us at [\[email protected\]](https://corporate.britannica.com/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection#2f4b5f406f4a4d014c4042)
108
109Only you, or a person registered with the California Secretary of State that you authorize to act on your behalf, may make a verifiable consumer request related to your personal information. You may also make a verifiable consumer request on behalf of your minor child.
110
111You may only make a verifiable consumer request for access or data portability twice within a 12-month period. The verifiable consumer request must:
112
113- Provide sufficient information that allows us to reasonably verify you are the person about whom we collected personal information or an authorized representative.
114- Describe your request with sufficient detail that allows us to properly understand, evaluate, and respond to it.
115
116We cannot respond to your request or provide you with personal information if we cannot verify your identity or authority to make the request and confirm the personal information relates to you.
117
118Making a verifiable consumer request does not require you to create an account with us.
119
120We will only use personal information provided in a verifiable consumer request to verify the requestor's identity or authority to make the request.
121
122**_Response Timing and Format_**
123
124We endeavor to respond to a verifiable consumer request within forty-five (45) days of its receipt. If we require more time, we will inform you of the reason and extension period in writing in accordance with CCPA requirements.
125
126If you have an account with us, we will deliver our written response to that account. If you do not have an account with us, we will deliver our written response by mail or electronically, at your option.
127
128 Any disclosures we provide will only cover the 12-month period preceding the verifiable consumer request's receipt. The response we provide will also explain the reasons we cannot comply with a request, if applicable. For data portability requests, we will select a format to provide your personal information that is readily useable and should allow you to transmit the information from one entity to another entity without hindrance.
129
130 We do not charge a fee to process or respond to your verifiable consumer request unless it is excessive, repetitive, or manifestly unfounded. If we determine that the request warrants a fee, we will tell you why we made that decision and provide you with a cost estimate before completing your request.
131
132**_Personal Information Sales Opt-Out and Opt-In Rights_**
133
134If you are 16 years of age or older, you have the right to direct us to not sell your personal information at any time (the "right to opt-out"). We do not sell the personal information of consumers we actually know are less than 16 years of age, unless we receive affirmative authorization (the "right to opt-in") from either the consumer who is between 13 and 16 years of age, or the parent or guardian of a consumer less than 13 years of age. Consumers who opt-in to personal information sales may opt-out of future sales at any time.
135
136To exercise the right to opt out, you (or your authorized representative) may submit a request to us by emailing [\[email protected\]](https://corporate.britannica.com/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection#84f4f6edf2e5e7fdc4e1e6aae7ebe9).
137
138Once you make an opt-out request, we will wait at least twelve (12) months before asking you to reauthorize personal information sales. However, you may change your mind and opt back in to personal information sales at any time by clearing cookies from your browser or emailing [\[email protected\]](https://corporate.britannica.com/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection#b8c8cad1ced9dbc1f8ddda96dbd7d5).
139
140 You do not need to create an account with us to exercise your opt-out rights. We will only use personal information provided in an opt-out request to review and comply with the request.
141
142**Non-Discrimination**
143
144We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your CCPA rights. Unless permitted by the CCPA, we will not:
145
146- Deny you goods or services.
147- Charge you different prices or rates for like-goods or services, including through granting discounts or other benefits, or imposing penalties.
148- Provide you a different level or quality of like-goods or services.
149- Suggest that you may receive a different price or rate for like-goods or services or a different level or quality of like-goods or services.
150
151However, we may offer you certain financial incentives permitted by the CCPA that can result in different prices, rates, or quality levels. Any CCPA-permitted financial incentive we offer will reasonably relate to your Personal Information's value and contain written terms that describe the program's material aspects. Participation in a financial incentive program requires your prior opt in consent, which you may revoke at any time. **We do not currently provide any financial incentives.**
152

154
155 California's "Shine the Light" law (Civil Code Section § 1798.83) permits users of our websites, mobile applications, and other products, services and platforms that are California residents to request certain information regarding our disclosure of personal information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes.
